The French colonial empire began in the 16th century and grew massively in the 19th century and 20th century. France announced the colonies were in: America, Carribean, Asia, Africa. The French pursued a policy known as “Mission civilistrace” aiming to spread the word of culture, religion, language, however this led to the resistance of population. The Dutch colonial empire was driven by trades and commerce. The Dutch east India Company and the Dutch West India Company played crucial roles in establishing and managing colonies. The Dutch were known for their extensive trademarks and strategic outpost’s. Which allowed them to dominate global commerce in the 17th century. However, their empire began to decline from conflicts with other European powers in the 18th century.
